DOES CANDLE THERAPY© WORK?

In my opinion and experience - yes!  It is very fulfilling for me to see people's results - often immediately.  For years, I have received visits, calls, and letters about blessings from using candles.  Candle Therapy® works by merging psychology and magic.  The psychology part involves doing all you can on the earthly plane to achieve your goals.  You must focus, define your aim, and make phone calls.  Gain the necessary skills and insights for your dream to come true.  In addition, psychologically, candles are soothing and make you feel like you are not alone in your efforts - and you're not!  You could even view this text as a series of psychological exercises, similar to what a cognitive therapist might assign as therapeutic "homework".  On a Self-Psychological level, a candle acts as a "self object".  The self-object is an object that is a reflection of self, upon which you act.  The candle reflects the spiritual and ethical changes you would like to bring about in yourself.  It burns as a reminder and symbol of your desire.  Candle Therapy©, however, differs from a psychological technique because of the essential involvement of your spirituality.  Sometimes we have to hand our dreams over to a force more powerful than we are.
Legally and otherwise, I can offer no guarantees that your wishes will be fulfilled the way you envision them.  Keep in mind that your goals and vision will change and clarify as the candle is burning.  Additionally, one must always assess whether there are spiritual and life plans for you about which you do not know.  Maybe you have not seen the final consequences of your request, because candles sometimes do not bring the results in seven days.  You must be persistent for that big goal.  Acknowledge and address the smaller steps along the way.  For example, if you are trying to finalize negotiations for selling your house, do different candles for the negotiations to be smooth for each party, your lawyer to do the best for you, the bank to accept and process the mortgage rapidly, etc.  Maybe you only have reached the first step of your dream.  That's great!  Congratulations!  Now keep going.
Cynics about magic dismiss it as saying it works only if you believe.  Certainly, belief is a strong element of any religion.  Belief in something's effectiveness explains the "placebo effect".  We can even regain our health through faith.  But, it's not all faith - it's also a power beyond you.  Since these techniques and methods have been used and passed down for centuries, I believe they have great power in themselves.  In essence, my observations confirm that Candle Therapy© works, whether you believe in it or not.  Many times people have candles made for them at my shop as gifts for people not attuned to Candle Therapy.  The candles worked and those people visited the shop later to find out why.

THE PROCESS AND GOALS

The fulfillment of life is a process.  The basis of our growth revolves around goals and dreams in this process.  One reaches a goal.  Then, one sets another.  The experiences along the way make us who we are.  This is the real magic.

·
DEFINE YOUR GOALS
As a friend of mine pointed out, "Magic is so results-oriented."  All the spells and books emphasize the goal.  "Get this", "do this", and "achieve this" are all very action-oriented ideas.  Wishes about one's successes, lovers, finances, health, luck, and self-growth are a constant part of life.  Even Candle Therapy© is goal-oriented.  The difference is that the goal is present, but not the ruling aspect of the magic.  We need a goal to feel organized about our thoughts.  The secret, however, is to ask for what you want spiritually, and then be open to the journey to get to your goal.  We often have no idea what the results will be.  It takes a great amount of faith and strength to trust that you will be given what is best for you.
The first step to success is defining and clarifying your goals.  Make lists or use whatever it takes for your clarity.  Through that focus, explore how to reach the goal and assess what steps are involved.  Defining your psychological goals has a practical side.  You will know, what you have to do in the real world to get something achieved.  In order for Candle Therapy® to work, you must put forth effort too. For example you cannot stop looking for work, because you are sure you are going to win the lottery.  You must make those phone calls and do what you can on the earthly plane to realize your dream.  Develop your skills so, when the opportunity comes, you will be ready.
_______
After you define your desire and burn a candle, you must assess the results and progress to the next level with your goal.  You, thereby, can gain a deeper level of psychological health and regain control of your life.  Dr. Riggs-Bergesen's Candle Therapy© suggests the next candle to burn on your path to success, love, healing, recovery, and growth.  It even offers alternative paths if your results are different from what you envisioned.

·SET REASONABLE GOALS
Research has shown, repeatedly, that those who are depressed tend to set unreasonable goals for themselves.  One technique to remedy the depression is to help the person learn to set reachable goals.  Assures that he or she receives accomplishes goals along the way and thus, builds confidence, a sense of achievement, and enjoyment of the process.

QUICK GUIDE TO CANDLE CARVING

The following is a brief summary of the steps to preparing a magical candle.

This page is handy when you need a reference.

1. ASSESS YOUR PURPOSE, keeping in mind what is best for everyone involved.

2. PURIFY AND PREPARE yourself for the focus and spiritual work ahead.

3. CHOSE THE CANDLE, SEALS from Candle Therapy or some other candle book, OILS, and INCENSES suitable for your purpose.

4. DO DIVINATION about the results of the choices you have made for your magic.

5. TASTE THE HONEY on the finger which corresponds to the planetary influence you would like to include.  This is an important symbolic offering. See Dr. Riggs-Bergesen's book Candle Therapy© for more information on finger choices and planetary influences.

6.  PREPARE & BLESS THE CANDLE JAR

7. CARVE THE SEAL(s), name(s), and astrological sign(s) in the wax.

8. APPLY OIL, which enhances the purpose of your request, on the candle.

9. (Optionally) APPLY GLITTER OR POWDERED INCENSE to the candle's surface.

10. POUR HONEY INTO THE CANDLE JAR.  You can pour it in a clockwise circle or in the form of an invoking pentagram.

MAKE WISHES WITH COPPER COINS.  Drop a few pennies into the bottom of the jar and make a wish with each one.  Three  is good for integrating and relationships, Five is good for bringing blessings, six is good for harmony, and nine is good for completion.

(Optionally) LIGHT INCENSE and drop it into the bottom of the jar.

KINDS AND COLORS OF CANDLES

Usually, candles are made from paraffin, stearite, or beeswax.  Some of us have preferences based upon the ingredients, but no one kind is more spiritual than another.  Certainly, using beeswax is good, because it avoids petroleum products, but the bottom line is that wax is wax; it is the power with which you imbue it that makes it different.  Also, the size of the candle does not dictate its power, only how long it burns.  Therefore, if you need more than a zap of power and your request may not happen overnight, you may need a longer burning candle.
The shapes of candles vary greatly.  Usually, candles are tapers, pillars, or globes. They can also be made in all kinds of shapes such as cats, skulls, mummies, genitals, or human figures. Other candles are poured into glass.  The glass can be printed or adorned with labels depicting religious figures.  We use a "7-day pull out" for candle carving.  This is a large candle in a glass tube or jar.  It burns for approximately 7 days.  "Pullout" refers to the candle's ability to come out of the glass. For Canle Therapy©, if you cannot get a pullout, any candle upon which you can carve will do.
Choosing a color with which to work is one of the most important steps in the magical process.  Color, through energy, evokes emotion and an altered state. Color is light and light is energy.  The work of a candle is moving energy and translating energy into will - and therefore performing magic.

THE PURPOSE OF THE COLORS

White (moon)   all the colors combined, also for purity, healing, meditation, peace,  protection, light, blessings, purification, all passages (birth & death), & uncrossing.

Yellow
(Sun, Mercury)   - happiness, joy, renewal, recognition, mental power, vitality, and will.

Blue
(Neptune, Ocean Mother, Jupiter)  calm, peace, inspiration, tranquillity, soothing, & deep justice.

Pink
(Venus)    - love, attraction, honor, affection, friendly feelings, and romance.

Green
(Venus)    - deep love, fertility, money, healing female problems, abundance, and growth

Red
(Mars)    - passion, energy, lust, courage, and strength.

Brown
(Earth)    - grounding, solidity, justice, integrity, and security.

Black
(Saturn)   - reduction of anything (such as weight or fear) as well as elimination of negativity.

Orange
(Mercury, Sun) - success, communication, writing, finding, skill, & smooth business dealings.

Purple - divinity, business and other expansions, luck, joviality, and generosity.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY CANDLE BE LIT?

Many people believe that candles are more powerful if left burning.  But, many other people are uncomfortable (and for good reasons, like cats) to leave candles burning unattended.  By leaving a candle burning when you have some fear about it, is undoing whatever good the candle could do.  You want to be sure the spirits do not get too fiery and cause a fire.  Also, the candle poured into a glass jar often break, because the wicks are not always in the center of the glass. Please never leave candles burning unattended.
Candle work is a process and usually more than 7 days are required for the fulfillment of the task.  Putting a candle out does not reduce its power.  It may, actually, increase your participation and thereby, increase its effectiveness. I prefer to light and relight a candle.  Remember, however, when you extinguish a candle, thank god, goddess, or whoever spiritually helps you with your request, even if you have not seen the results yet.  When you relight it, reaffirm what the candle is for.  Always finish all candles; it's a matter of respect.  This will be discussed further in the section below called, "How soon will my candle work?"

HOW SOON WILL MY CANDLE WORK?

It varies.  Candles may work before you light them, during the burning, when it ends, or a time later.  I had one candle achieve its goal while it was still in my handbag, heading home.  Often, you are so clear in your intention, your goal manifests post haste.  Results can also occur gradually during the time it burns or when it completely burns out.  It can come at one week, one month, or longer.  It could take weeks, months, or years to see the full results, depending upon the magnitude and grantability of your request.  That is why I suggest that you conquer the steps along the way to achieving your goal, instead of focusing on the end results such as marriage, fame, or big cash .  Don't always run to do another candle.  Wait.  Have faith.  The magic doesn't end when the flame does.  (That is why you can put a candle out and have it still be as strong).  On the other hand, if the request is big, ongoing, or has great obstacles, be persistent and do another candle based on what you have learned with the first one.
Always finish all candles.  As mentioned above, it is a matter of respect.  Even if you have already achieved your goal or feel that the purpose was misdirected, burn it to the end.  Maybe your goal is not complete.  Maybe the process of burning the candle changed you and the goal.

WHEN TO LIGHT THE CANDLE: MAGICAL DAYS AND THE MOON

I am a bit liberal with my guidelines.  If you have guidelines with which you are more comfortable, please continue to use them.  My intention is to open the seeker to knowledge without burdening him or her with rules.  Frameworks and rules should be discovered and formed by the seeker.  Spiritual practice varies greatly with individual beliefs.  I encourage you to explore and see what works for you.

TIMING

Time is a controversial issue with magicians.  Many feel it is of utmost importance that a magical working be performed during advantageous astrological configurations, as well as during the appropriate magical day and hour.  This, certainly, will intensify your ritual, but not all of us can or want to plan our lives according to planetary movements.  For example, the hour of Venus might be during your lunch hour.  So you run home, light your candle, and run back to work.  Your focus and concentration at that time would be limited.  I believe that the most important aspect of timing is having time to spend with your candle.
In addition, there does not have to be a flame for your candle to be working.
Many people are rigid about magical work and the phases of the moon.  If something needs to be done, you may not be able to wait for the appropriate moon phase.  We will discuss how to change your mediation so magical work can be performed at any phase.

  • If you would like to use the planetary influences, first consider the days of the week and the moon phase.  You can light it at any moon phase, but your meditation may change accordingly.
  • Consider astrological aspects, what astrological sign the moon is in, and the ideal planetary hour of  the day.  Unfortunately, this is too extensive an area to address here and can be found in the book, Candle Therapy©.

 LIGHTING SCHEDULES

Scheduling around planetary days, hours, and aspects is an important, but ultimately fine point, of magical work.  Each of the following magical recipes in Candle Therapy© gives suggestions about timing for your candle.  For example, some people like to light a Venus (attraction) candle on the day (Friday) and/or at the hour of Venus.  To stabilize a love relationship or increase communication, you might want to light a candle on the day of Venus in the hour of Mercury.  If you want to expand your business, you can light a candle on the day of Jupiter (expansion), in the hour of Venus (money) on a waxing moon in Mercury (customers will hear about you).  You might even light it on a day of Saturn for finalizing negotiations.

Below are charts outlining the planets' meanings and their corresponding days and hours.

MAGICAL DAYS

The days have been named for the ruling planet.  For example, Sunday is the day of the Sun:

Day of the Week     Planet   Names For
Monday      Moon (silver, white)          Moon day
Tuesday      Mars (red)        Tiw's day
Wednesday    Mercury (orange/yellow/gray)    Woden's day
Thursday      Jupiter (purple/blue)      Thor's day
Friday        Venus (pink/green)      Freya or Frigg's day
Saturday    Saturn (black/brown)    Saturn or Seterne's day
Sunday      Sun (yellow/orange)        Sun day

If you are going to try to adhere to any of the fine points of timing, I would encourage you to choose a magical day upon which to work, according to your purpose.  What phase the moon is in also has an effect upon your candle - or at least upon your meditation.  The following section briefly describes the significance of the moon.

THE MOON

The moon is an age-old symbol that has represented everything from protection to danger.  The phases are essential cycles which human events and earthly rhythms follow.  For example, often a woman's menstrual cycle follows the moon cycle.  A woman often ovulates or menstruates on the new or full moons.  From moon to moon was a "period".  That's why a woman's bleeding time is called a "period".  In addition, the old calendar was thirteen months, following the number of moon cycles (and thus menstrual cycles).  Why do you think the number thirteen got such a bad rep as the world shifted from a matriarchal to patriarchal society?  The word month came from the Latin word “mensis”.  Its plural is menses.  “Mens” in latin refers to moon, mind, and spiritual power. The Roman goddess Mensa, like moon goddess Minerva, measured time.

MAGICAL LOVE ADVICE

Have you ever been in love?  Really in love?  Do you feel that love now?  Is that person cherishing you and considering you as a priority?   What do you love about him or her?       Why do you respect them?  What are your needs and are they being met?  Do they call you enough?  Is the communication good?  Is the person available?  If not, do you have a convincing justification for why that is okay?  Can you answer these questions?  How many are yes's?
Of course, every relationship, no matter how fine, has a couple of problems.  The issues revolve around how hard you have to work to make the relationship work.  It doesn't have to be vastly difficult.  To be loved, you don't have to get yelled at.  Love means never having to be struck or beaten.  You don't have to carry the entire weight of the relationship.  If you are with someone who is like that, they don't have to change - your relationship does, however.  Either you both need to communicate your needs and create mutual consideration - or you may have to let go.  Like the Tower card, change and/or leveling the faulty foundation is necessary so a better foundation can be built.

LOVE IS

  • not wondering (if he or she will call, loves you, etc.)
  • not feeling bad (unless it's a temporary thing about which you have to talk. Things do come up.) an experience which brings out the best in you.  Love will make you feel & act better.
  • communicating openly and honestly (we often want people to be honest with us, but are we being honest with them?  Even if you can justify why you are bending the truth to your lover, you are not being honest.  The way you are sets the tone.  They will never be honest as long as you are not.  If you are not free to be truthful, maybe he or she is not the one for you.
  • understanding they are a different person with different styles of expression.  These styles may not be the same as yours.
  • understanding they are not going to change.  Can you accept them as they are?
  • wanting to be faithful without pressure or rules.
  • paying attention to each other and being partners.  The definition of being a team will be different for each person.  Be sure to talk about it.

OFFERING ARE ESSENTIAL

ONE MUST GIVE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE.

Offerings are symbolic gestures of your willingness to give in order to receive.  Offerings can take many forms.  In your meditations, leave yourself open to be told what should be the exchange.  Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs is an excellent guide to what herbs and oils are sacred to what element, goddess, or god.
Offerings must mean something to you.  They do not have to be expensive, just thought-out.  Consider what is a suitable gift to whoever helps you spiritually.  It could be flowers, coins, coconuts, shells, or a special piece of jewelry.  If you take a seashell, leave an offering to the sea.  You can choose a flower especially for the sea and throw the petals into the water.  It is said that bad luck will befall anyone who removes lava from a Hawaiian island.  As illustrated by the nature of lava and volcanoes, Pele is a severe, but beautiful goddess.  A friend of mine told me about taking a piece of lava from a volcano crater.  With great thought and respect, he left a suitable fiery offering, which meant something to him- his last cigarette.  Although I think Pele will be kind to him, I do not advise anyone try this.  Think about every bit of nature you take home, you might decide to leave it.
Some spirits like and are attracted to incense.  The Santerian Orishas such as Chango (St. Barbara) like apples as offerings.  Mercury is associated with offerings of bergamot and the Sun, with mistletoe.  A suitable offering for Jupiter is nutmeg.  Venus loves flowers, camphor, and a myriad of herbs.  Honey is also a good offering to Venus and often used in Candle Therapy© and magic.

HONEY
Tasting the honey is a symbolic offering to Venus.  The history of this dates back to courtly food tasters.  Their role was to taste the food before the queen, king, or dignitary did, to prevent poisoning.  This offering was derived from the legend that Venus was poisoned by honey.  By tasting the honey, you are offering yourself to Venus as the taster to protect her.  If the honey is poisoned, you die.  You are, in essence, stating that you desire this request to such a degree, you are willing, symbolically, to give your life for it.

HOW YOUR CANDLE BURNS

As the candle burns, examine how it burns.  The way your candle burns tells something about the task.  The energy of a candle can change things, but also tell you what will and is happening in the way they burn.  It can reveal how the request is going, being received, will turn out, and how hard it is to achieve.
Did the glitter or wax stick to the glass?  Meditate on the shapes and colors left there.  Can you see any forms or symbols in the wax left on the glass?  Maybe your request is not so straightforward or maybe it's a sticky situation.
How did your candle burn?  Did it keep going out?  Did it burn slowly or quickly?  Did the flame flicker?  Did it burn cleanly or give off soot?  Again, meditate upon what message you get about how it burnt.
As a general guideline - think positively first.  What a candle does is not a "bad" sign.  That may be hard to do faced with any emotional issue:
            * If it gives off soot, you are burning off the negativity and obstacles surrounding your issue.  Keep burning a candle about the issue until it burns cleanly.
            * If it flickers, your candle is working hard.  Perhaps there is some vacillation in the progress or even in your own mind or maybe it is hammering out some results!
            * Did it burn slowly or go out?  The task may require a slow and careful process.  Or there could be numerous obstacles to overcome and the candle is laboring with all its might.  It may also be indicating that you need to reassess the way you are thinking about your request.  Maybe things have changed since you started the candle.  Maybe you are not thinking of the highest good of all parties involved.  Candles can, in those circumstances, go out.  If this happens, it is part of your symbolic work to relight it and think about the issues at hand.  Spiritual work takes participation.  The candle may need your help to keep working and overcoming obstacles.  You might need to dig wax out or dislodge the wick.  This might require carving down the outer sides of the candle.  Never pour off the center, it creates a bigger hole in which to drown your wick.  Keep lighting it and working with it.
Sometimes, a candle keeps going out and it is reflecting a bigger process at hand.  There may be an issue of your fate and more at hand than your wish.  Perhaps, you do a candle to keep your job and it keeps going out.  The candle could be indicating what is happening.  The bosses are deciding to fire you.  A single candle sometimes cannot overcome massively dire circumstances that may be part of propelling you into evolving.  Keep in mind that your candle may not give you the specific wish, but it will take care of you.  Even if you cannot see the good in whatever happens, know it will come.  The best will happen!

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE CANDLE ENDS

It is good to let go of the candle when it is done.  It is an expression of faith.  When the candle finishes, kiss the glass and thank whatever higher force helped you achieve your goal.  Place some offering (coins, petals, or another token of your appreciation) in the bottom of the glass.  Place it in a separate bag from your garbage and put it in a recycling bin.  Although it is spiritually correct to return a spell or magical request to living water or the earth, waxes and our magical remnants are pollution.  Most candles are petroleum products.  (If you think about it, our dumping is in the ocean or landfills.  So your candle does end up returning to the earth or water anyway.  But, it's better to recycle it.)  Please choose the most ecologically kind way to dispose of your candles!
Another approach for marking the end of your candle is used by my colleague, Lonnie.  He breaks the glass, signifying a letting go and the end of the spell.  For those of us who are accident prone and concerned about the trash handlers, please proceed with care.  On the other hand, it could not be more perfect for some purposes.  Please cover your eyes and hands.  Also package the remains so you don't rip up a sanitation worker.

DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG? WHY DIDN’T IT WORK?

Remember that the minute the candle stops, the energy does not.  Wait and keep your eyes open.  The candle may have solved things or you may have to do another candle addressing another aspect of your request.
The request will not backfire if you could not make it look like the picture of the seal in this book.  It does not matter if you can draw well…or if the note you write in the wax is legible.  It is important to focus on the task and try your best.  The spirits know what you mean. It is your intention and focus that has therapeutic and spiritual impact.  It you feel really blocked and negative, have someone who believes in the best for you carve the candle.
…But you're still sure that you did something wrong…

If you do a step differently or with different ingredients, it is not wrong.  Many people feel the candle didn't work because they made a mistake in the steps.  The only mistake would be a lack of ethics and openness to see what the universe did bring.  Examine whether your request takes into account what is for the highest good of all involved.  Candles are used to remove worry, not make you obsessed with the purpose. Try to see what the candle is telling you - and think positively!!  If you do not get what you want, examine why it may not be the best thing for you.

WHAT TO DO IF IT SEEMS YOUR CANDLE DID NOT WORK

1.   Reassess the way you are thinking about your request.  Maybe you are not clear or your intent isn't pure.  Assess what is best for all.  Stay open to other things happening.  It may not be exactly the way you envision it.

2.   Always burn a candle to the end.  Your ending goal may change midway through.  You may be tempted to think that the candle did not work if a candle brings you different results from what was first intended.  Say, you had your eye on a man that you wanted as a boyfriend.  If you found out he was a jerk, you might be tempted to throw out the candle.  But, the candle may have eliminated months and years of hell and time wasted.  By the end of the candle, you have your eye on someone better.  The candle definitely worked to bring the best love to you.

3.  Do your own magical work.  The strength of Candle Therapy© is doing the carving and focusing yourself.  The exception is when there is such an emotional issue you cannot think positively about it.  You may not have faith in yourself.  I encourage you to gain clarity through meditation, calm thought, divination, or speaking to a psychologist or a close friend.   If you are still unclear, consider many different approaches to your issue.  Read the choices in this book and do your preparation for the ritual.  You may have doubts, as all of us do, which will dissolve as the ritual is performed or the candle is burnt.  The procedures may resolve the fears.  Through the rituals, as outlined, if you are still unable to do the candle because of doubts or fears, involve a trusted friend in carving the candle.  If you cannot figure out how to proceed, you can visit my store (Other Worldly Waxes, 131 East 7th street, NYC).  You will find experienced people there who will be objective and really care about doing the best candle and magical work for you.

4. Follow your intuition.  As long as a ritual is done with respect, you probably made no errors.  Follow your intuition.  When I first learned to meditate (in the 70's), I naively asked a friend of mine, Stephen (who I consider a true master), "When you are meditating and a fly lands on your nose, what do you do?"  He smiled wisely and answered simply, "Flick it off."  Because a step is not in the spiritual manual, it does not mean that your intuition and common sense take a hike.  Some of magic and psychology, for that matter, is "winging it" and sensing what is the best move or judgment.

We are human, therefore, we want what we want.

Leave yourself open to other possibilities and what the universe will bring.

BOTTOM LINE

·         As you do your candles and ask for things, not only will you get what you ask for, but also your desire will be redefined.  You will become focused through the ritual of doing the candles.  You will also get a clear vision and awareness of the consequences of your acts.  You also have to focus and know, reasonably, what goals you can reach.  Once you gain a sense of control through doing your candles (in conjunction with your spirituality), you will have an important tool.  Candle Therapy will be a life-long tool, which will help you learn to live optimally.

IS CANDLE THERAPY© AGAINST MY RELIGION?

MAGIC IS NOT AGAINST ANY RELIGION. IT is PART OF every religion. Every religion has its magic, using tools of candles, oils, incense, and prayer.  For example, I would guess that Henri Gamache who wrote The Master Book of Candle Burning would be soundly upset if you even vaguely asserted that he was writing about witchcraft.  His magic uses candles, astrology, prayers, and Bible scriptures.  He states specifically that matters of the occult, voodoo, and black magic are of no part of his work.  I assume witchcraft would be lumped into the "occult".  In addition, The Magus: A Complete System of Occult Philosophy is an extremely Christian work, complete with Christian prayers and discussions of the Bible.  Kraig's Modern Magic is based on Judaism and the Qabalah.  The Golden Dawn and other adherents to ceremonial magic also merge much of the Qabalistic principles into their work.

ETHICS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER WITH CANDLE THERAPY®

Magic is About Ethics, Healing, and ChangeAlways try to think of a way to achieve your goal in the most healing, ethical, and positive way.  Magic, itself, is neither good nor bad.  What you do with it determines whether it is black, white or gray magic.  Your intentions make a candle good or evil.
Examine your everyday ethics.  Do you consider yourself to be ethical and dedicated to good?  Sometimes, we might do things in an easy way, instead of an ethical way.  This choice can be made at the cost of deep learning.  For example, if you ordered some items from a company and they did not charge you for all of them, it would be tempting to keep the free items without telling the company.  Since they were a rich monopoly, you could justify your theft.  If you tell the company, they might surprise you by letting you keep the items free of charge.  They might not, but you will feel better dealing with it.  Choices to be honest keep your mind clear for more essential functions.
Every unethical choice you make hangs on you like a little dark badge on your knit sweater.  The sweater ultimately gets very heavy and very dark, and needs a good wash.  You become very unhappy and things aren't going right.  Maybe your sweater even smells and repulses your lover.  Now you're in a fine mess and it started with small things and metaphorically accumulated blackness.  This blackness is a burden, weighing you down.  Freedom consists of always choosing the higher path.  This means not lying, cheating, stealing, of course, not hitting, maiming, or killing.
